Description

And now, for the cartoon, anime, video game and whatever's character celebrating his/her/its birthday in February…

First released as a Game Boy RPG with an element of strategy in February 1996, created by Satoshi Tajiri for Nintendo (along with 'Game Freaks' and 'Creatures'), the main objective of the game, that would continue through the franchise, would be to try to be the very best, like no one ever was; to catch them is the real test and training them is the cause.  In this and subsequent games, the player would travel across the land, searching far and wide each pocket monster to understand the power that's inside. The creatures would become your best friends in a world you must defend. At first, they were 'just' 150 creatures, but the number increased with later games adding several new ones (and you gotta catch them all). All the creatures communicate by repeating their own species' name, sometimes with some minor variations; yet it seems to work as a complete, rational language that the other species can understand without much trouble; in subsequent games and animated series, a few species with psychic/dark powers would prove themselves capable of using them to communicate with humans, and the animated series even introduced a feline creature that can talk to humans in our own language at the expense of sacrificing much of his own species' battle abilities.

The games became an instant hit, and adapted to animation in April 1997, separated from most of the video games' canon even if still obviously inspired by the games, with the series adding new regions and creatures according with the new games. The still ongoing series has also spawned several animated films, at least one per each of the anime's seasons. The series also added recurring villains to the franchise, so facing them is yet another challenge for the player/protagonist beyond catching, training and competing with the creatures. These villains would get important character development, sometimes even more than the protagonists (seriously, the guy had been a 10 years old since 1997); they're always ready for trouble and making it double, to protect the world from devastation and unite all people within their nation, denounce the evils of truth and love, and extend their reach to the stars above. In the end of most battles, of course, they get blasted off (again) at the speed of light; yet they'll return to ask you to surrender now or prepare to fight. Yep, that's right.

The franchise remains as one of Nintendo's mains, with many games still keeping with the RPG and strategy team yet some of them focus mostly on the creatures' battles, with the trainer using strategy to make them defeat the opponent's., as it happens in the anime. They have inspired all kind of toys, comic books/manga, and even live action theatrical shows. So, it's safe to assume that the various creatures will still be jumping out of their poke-balls for many more years.

So, Happy Birthday to you all, and continue teaching us as we teach you. .. and you can be sure, we're gonna catch you all. POKE-BALL, GO!!!!

Me: It is so nice to see you, Pokèmons. I enjoyed watching your series in Turkish dub.
