Description

The next card is dedicated to DC Comics' most popular archer hero.

Created by by Morton Weisinger and designed by George Papp, he first appeared in 'More Fun Comics' #73 in November 194. Oliver Queen, a billionaire businessman and owner of Queen Industries, he discovered his innate archery abilities after getting stranded in a deserted island for a long period of time, and, once he returned to civilization, started using his newly found skills to fight crime and help people, having acquired a strong social conscience after his near-death experience. He'd later improve his arsenal with trick arrows who with various special functions, such as glue arrows, diversions (smoke), net, explosive, time bomb, grappling, fire extinguishing, flash, boomerang, tear gas arrows, cryonic arrows and many other types.

At the time of his debut, Oliver functioned in many ways as an archery-themed analogue of the Dark Knight, but writers at DC subsequently developed him into a voice of progressivism, very much distinct in character from The Caped Crusader, with his own supporting cast; plus, unlike his Gotham colleague, Oliver is willing to kill when the situation warrants extreme action. In the 70s he got paired with a more law and order-oriented hero, Hal Jordan aka Green Lantern, in a ground-breaking, socially conscious comic book series, and since then, he has been popular among comic book fans, and most writers have taken an urban, gritty approach to the character. Usually in a very loving relationship with Dinah Lance aka The Black Canary (even if he's a well known women's magnet), Oliver had become quite popular in the 2000s, featuring in a number of DC television properties, including the Justice League Unlimited, Young Justice, The Batman, and The Brave and The Bold's animated series, as well as several animated original movies, and being a regular character in the live action 'Smallville' series, before getting his own series, 'Arrow' in 2012.

So, Happy Birthday, Ollie, and yeah, you'll probably eat your cake with a Spoon and Fork Arrow.
