Description

And now, for the toons, comic book, and movie characters celebrating their birthdays in August…

Created by Tex Avery, and first debuting in 'Blitz Wolf' (as an Adolf Hitler's parody, and retelling the 'Three Little Pigs' story in a World War II setting), a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer short produced by Fred Quimby, premiered in 22 August, 1942. The canine character proved so popular that he returned in 'Red Hot Riding Hood' (1943), a retelling of the Red Riding Hood's story with the wolf playing a Hollywood swinger. The wolf would soon become Droopy Dog's most recurrent opponent, and he'd still continue playing girl-chasing roles more than once, usually going after Red.

While he was never officially named, the wolf has received several names over the years, with 'Slick' and 'McWolf' as the more used ones on more recent years, and Red often calling him 'Wolfie' in her songs. His cartoons, specially on the first years, included many sexual overtones, violence, and rapid gags, all which made him very popular among adults, especially soldiers. While many of these traits had to get toned down when appearing on TV shows, the wolf would still prove himself popular enough to appear as a recurrent cast member in Tom and Jerry's related-series, and making cameos in some direct-to-video movies, even becoming an official couple with Red. Plus, his gags are often referenced in other cartoons and movies, most notably in 'The Mask' ones.

So, Happy Birthday, Wolf-Guy, and hope you have some good fun without ending in jail… and if you do, don't try to escape; even if you succeed, you know Droopy will catch you anyway.
