April - Birthday Card

Description

And now, for the cartoon, comic book and movie characters that celebrate their birthdays in April, we have two guys who had been a constant problem for The Man of Steel almost from day one.

The first one, created by Jerry Siegel and and Joe Shuster, first appearing in Action Comics #23 (April 1940), is a diabolical genius who had played several villainous stereotypes since his creation, from a mad scientist who wreaks havoc with his futuristic weapons to a power mad business magnate, and everything in-between, many times keeping a facade of a phylanthropist and honest business man so his kryptonian nemesis can't confront him directly; thanks to this public image and his leadership skills, the bald genius has been the leader of the Legion of Doom, the Secret Society of Supervillains and the Injustice Gang, the mastermind of numerous plots agains the heroes of Earth, and briefly, President of the United States of America. Because of this, and also thanks to his incredibly advanced intellect, he had been recognized as Kal-El's arch-enemy despite usually lacking superhuman powers himself, to the point that, whenever the army suspects the Last Son of Krypton may become a menace in the future, they get old Lexy pardoned of his crimes in exchange of technical advise. In any incarnation, he is driven by his burning hatred of his alien nemesis, which is frequently put down to envy over the fact that, no matter how rich Luthor becomes, no matter how much political power he attains, and no matter how hard he schemes, he will never be like him. Ironically, in some incarnations, they have started as friends, and many times, the bald genius has considered himself the REAL hero that is trying to protect mankind from the godlike alien... of course, in reality, what he can't stand is that people isn't adoring him instead.

The second villain is one of the Man of Steel's most physically powerful foes, as they are both kryptonians. First appearing in Adventure Comics · 283 (April 1961), and created by Robert Bernstein over a George Papp's design, the general is a kryptonian warlord, originally in charge of his home planet's military forces until he attempted to take over the entire planet. He got defeated and, along with his closest allies, sentenced to the Phantom Zone, with Jor-El (Kal-El's father) giving the last, deciding vote. Ironically, this sentence saved the villain's life, as he survived Krypton's destruction, and, many years later, managed to escape the Phantom Zone to get revenge on Jor-El's son, both by trying to conquer his adoptive planet, and forcing the hero to 'kneel' before him in servitude.

Both villains had appeared in most media involving the Man of Tomorrow, from comics and live action series to videogames, cartoons and movies, always as a very serious challenge for the heroic kryptonian. Still, since they'd probably get offended if we don't, let's wish them a happy birthday, and hope they don't destroy or conquer the planet in the meantime.
